Caring for Your Denver Glass Tiles

June 29, 2016

Glass tiles are increasingly becoming the go-to choice in Denver home renovation projects, both inside and outside, often surpassing ceramic and other materials due to their durability, versatility, and resistance to staining. With a wide range of colors and patterns, glass tiles can be tailored to suit any aesthetic while requiring frequent but brief cleaning to maintain their shine.

Glass Tile Kitchen Backsplashes
The grease and dirt that gather on kitchen surfaces and appliances don’t accumulate as much on glass, which is one of glass tiles’ many advantages. Using only a mild cleanser, either purchased from the store or made at home with a combination of equal parts white vinegar and water, and a soft bristle brush, you should be able to remove any build-up from the tiles themselves. Glass is a fairly tough material and can withstand scrubbing, but be careful not to damage the softer grout in between. You can buff and shine with a towel after cleaning to remove any residual water spots, leaving your tiles glowing and streak-free.

Glass Tile Bathroom Surfaces: Accent Walls, Backsplashes, Showers
Another benefit of glass tiles is that they don’t absorb water and are resistant to mold and mildews, so they are ideally suited for placement in bathrooms and other areas that often accumulate moisture. However, soap scum and mineral deposits from hard water are issues in every bathroom, and mold could become a problem for the grout between the glass tiles. The more frequently you spend just a few minutes scrubbing down your tiles, the fewer layers of scum will build up and the better your tile will appear. Use a mixture of ¼ cup bleach and ¾ cup water to apply to the grout, or purchase a standard bathroom grout cleaner. Let your cleanser soak into the tile and grout for ten minutes or so, then use a soft bristle brush to remove the grime. You can use a squeegee or towel to remove any streaks or spots from the entire surface.

Glass Tile Floors
These types of floors require a little more maintenance to keep them looking beautiful. It’s important to sweep regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt, which can be ground into the tiles by foot traffic, causing small scratches in the glass and marring or dirtying the grout. Mopping occasionally with a mild cleanser after sweeping is a good way to ensure your floors stay glossy and bright.

Maintaining Glass Tile Surfaces
Like most tiled surfaces, it’s simple to care for them if you stay on top of it. Wipe up any spills right as they occur, be gentle but firm in your cleanings, and remember to buff the tiles after every cleaning to keep them reflective.
