Pros and Cons of Denver Slate Countertops

August 17, 2016

Slate is one of the most beautiful natural stones available for home installation. This metamorphic rock is a great addition to kitchens and bathrooms, but is it right for your home? Here are the pros and cons of Denver slate countertops:

Pro: Slate is non-porous.
You may have heard that a lot of natural stones such as marble and travertine are porous, but slate is not. This means there are no tiny holes on the surface of Denver slate, so liquids and bacteria cannot slip in beneath the surface to damage or stain the stone. When you spill a glass of wine or grape juice on slate countertops, you can wipe it up without worrying about how stained or discolored your countertop will look afterwards. Being able to resist stains and fight off bacteria is a great quality for a kitchen countertop, which is why so many homeowners choose Denver slate.

Con: Slate has sharp edges.

Although there are not many downsides to having Denver slate countertops, one is that this natural stone tends to have sharp edges. If you have children in the house or are clumsy, it may be best to talk to your professional installer about rounding out the sharp edges to prevent injuries.

Pro: Slate is durable.
Kitchen countertops have to withstand a lot, especially if you tend to cook a lot of meals at home. Luckily, Denver slate is durable and resistant to common kitchen mishaps. This natural stone does not chip or scratch easily, meaning you can accidentally bang it with a pot or drop a piece of silverware on it without worrying about damaging your counters. It also holds up well when exposed to heat, so don’t worry about accidentally putting a hot pan down on your counter to answer the phone or tend to your kids. Having a countertop that is so durable makes it much easier to cook and entertain in your kitchen without having to fuss over your counters.

Pro: Slate is usually less expensive.

Denver slate typically costs less than other natural stone options such as granite, marble and quartz. Although prices will vary depending on which slate style you choose, you can expect slate to come in lower than these other options.

Con: Slate has a matte appearance.
Many customers love marble and granite because of its glossy appearance. Denver slate tends to have more of a matte finish, so if you are in the market for a shinier countertop, slate is not the best choice for you. However, if the rest of your room features bright, bold colors, perhaps a matte countertop would work well to balance everything out.
