How to Keep Denver Marble Clean

November 22, 2017

Marble has become an increasingly popular flooring and countertop choice over the last several years. But, many people still don’t know how to clean this natural stone to preserve its incredible beauty. Keep your Denver marble in pristine condition by following these tips:

Avoid Harsh or Abrasive Cleaning Supplies

Don’t just grab the first cleaning solution within your reach if you need to clean your marble flooring or countertops. Cleaning solutions that contain bleach or vinegar will damage the surface of the marble, so they should always be avoided. Instead of using one of these store-bought cleaning solutions, simply use hot water and a mild soap to clean marble floors and countertops. You also have the option of buying a cleaner that is specifically designed for marble, however this is not necessary as long as you have soap and water.

Be careful when choosing a cloth or pad that will be used to wipe down the marble. The cloth or pad must be soft and non-abrasive so it does not scratch the surface of the marble.

Removing Etched Stains

Accidents happen. If an acidic liquid such as orange juice or coffee accidentally makes contact with your marble floors or countertop, it’s important to know how to remove the etched stain from the stone. This cannot be done with soap and water no matter how hard you scrub. Instead, you will need to visit a local home improvement store and look for marble polishing powder. If you can’t find this product, contact the company that installed the marble and ask them where you should look.

Sprinkle the marble polishing powder over the affected area. Then, either use an electric buffer or soft cloth to polish the surface of the marble. Once the etched stain has been removed, rinse the area that has been polished to remove any excess powder. Learn how to get out an etched stain in marble tile.

Clean Up Spills

Anytime something spills on marble, it’s best to clean up the spill as quickly as possible to prevent stains. To clean up a spill, wipe the area with a soft, damp cloth. It’s important to gently wipe the cloth over the area instead of scrubbing the marble clean. Applying too much pressure could either cause scratches or push the stain deeper into the porous surface of the marble.

Be sure to use a second cloth to dry the area after the spill has been cleaned. Water that sits on the surface of the marble could sink into the stone and cause stains, so this is an important step in the process.
