3 Major Advantages of Using Denver Natural Stone vs. Faux

April 1, 2016

If you’re a fan of home improvement shows you probably know that natural stone countertops and accents add beauty and value to both indoor and outdoor environments. Natural stone is long lasting and easy to care for - not to mention the numerous Denver natural stone environmental benefits. If you’ve been researching information about adding a stone accent wall or patio to your home, you may have come across information about faux, or cultured stone. In recent years this product has been widely used but there are many advantages to using natural stone as opposed to manufactured.

Cost Advantages

One of the biggest myths about fake stone products is the assumption that because it’s not genuine, it must be less expensive. This is simply not true. The cost per foot of material may be slightly less but installation costs are likely to make up for the deficit as it is not as durable as natural stone, so other protectants must be added. It also must be updated and re-applied much more frequently than real stone.

Real Stone is Kinder to the Earth

The quarrying process of natural stone has very little environmental impact without producing many greenhouse gasses or high thermal output. It also does not bring any toxic off-gasses or fumes into the home once installed. The manufacturing of artificial stone by contrast is much less green. They are often manufactured using aluminum and other metals which are toxic to the environment. They also contain plastics and other polyurethane polymers which can be high in toxicity with prolonged exposure.

Long Lasting Beauty and Easy Care

From a durability standpoint no other material comes close to stone. The stone tiles in ancient sites have maintained their beauty and structure for literally thousands of years. Many types of natural stones, especially those used for outdoor applications have very low absorption rates so they resist natural moisture as well as stains. Protective coating should be applied annually but otherwise very little maintenance is required. Artificial products are likely manufactured from cement which by contrast is extremely porous and absorbent. They are much more likely to retain moisture which can cause structural damage, especially with improper installation. Exposure to extreme heat or cold can also cause plastic based veneers to warp and become dislodged very easily.

The color of manufactured stones is achieved by mixing powdered dyes into the mix during the manufacturing process. These dyes are likely to fade or change colors over time especially if they are exposed to sunlight. Real stone has very little shift in color and rarely fades, even on patios and exterior walls exposed to direct sunlight.
