How to Keep Your Denver Granite in Pristine Condition

Granite is an excellent way to completely change the look of a room in your home whether it is your kitchen, bathroom, or other areas. While you don’t have to worry about extensive care, especially if it has been sealed, it is best to properly care for your Denver granite for life-long quality.

Sealing Granite: No matter where you’re putting in granite, one of the top things you can do to maintain it is to make sure it is sealed. Because this material is somewhat porous, sealing it will help prevent it from scratches and stains. It’s recommended that you make sure your kitchen counters are sealed once per year to block liquids such as wine or cooking oils from seeping into your granite. Other areas may not need to be sealed as often. This is something you can work with your local granite expert on. A good tip to see if you need to re-seal your granite, they say to dribble some water on it. If it beads up, your sealant is still working great. If any soaks into the granite though, it is time to reseal.

Cleaners: One of the great things about granite is the fact that is very easy to maintain. You do not need to use bleach, cleaners with chemicals, scrub brushes or many other types of cleaner. In The Kitchn’s article “How to Clean and Disinfect Granite Countertops,” they explain the use of cleaners, including glass cleaner or acidic cleaners will dull and weaken your sealant. All you need to do is use warm water and a mild detergent or even dish soap. You can do this daily and be sure to always wipe away spills right after they happen. Also, if you are looking for something different than a mild detergent or dish soap, you can use a go-to cleaner that is specifically made for granite.

Disinfectants: By sealing your granite, you have already reduced your risk from bacteria getting into your counters. The Kitchn explains the cleaning methods above should usually be enough for your daily cleaning. In the event you do need something a little more heavy duty, they advise a mixed solution spray bottle that is half water and half 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. Spray this on your granite and let it sit for three to five minutes. After the time is up, rinse it with water and dry off with a microfiber cloth, which also helps to reduce streaks.
