How to Protect Denver Hardwood Floors

Have you recently had hardwood floors installed in your home? If you want to keep them looking this beautiful and luxurious for years to come, it’s important you take good care of them. Denver hardwood is not indestructible, but it can be protected if you follow these tips:

Wipe off your shoes
If you have tiny pieces of dirt or debris stuck to the bottom of your shoes, you can cause tiny scratches on the surface of your hardwood floor. To avoid this issue, put a mat down in front of every door so guests can wipe their shoes before entering your home. It’s best to ask guests to take their shoes off completely, especially if they are wearing high heels, which can damage the finish of your wood.

Vacuum regularly
Just as grit on the bottom of your shoes can cause scratches, so can dirt and debris that inevitably make their way on top of your hardwood floors. Be sure you regularly vacuum your floors to suck up any of this dirt or debris before it is pressed or rubbed against your hardwood.

Put pads down
If you don’t have rugs down underneath your furniture, put pads underneath the furniture legs to prevent scratches on the hardwood. Don’t worry, the pads are barely visible once they’re in place, so you don’t have to worry about them ruining the look of the rest of your room.

Wipe up spills
If someone accidentally spills something on the surface of your hardwood floors, make sure you wipe it up as soon as you notice it. Liquids that sit on the surface of your floors can eventually warp the wood or damage the finish, so it’s important to clean spills up as soon as possible.

Use the right products
There are dozens of cleaning products designed specifically for hardwood floors, so make sure you are only using these. Other cleaners can contain harsh chemicals such as ammonia or bleach, which can either dull or etch the topcoat of your wood’s finish. Refinish your floors as needed
Over time, the finish on your floors will begin to fade and to restore its beauty, you will need to consider having them refinished. This requires using a sander to remove the remains of the old finish, and then putting down a new, fresh coat. If you have never re-finished anything before, it may be best to call in a professional for help, otherwise you could cause damage to your beautiful floors.
