Choices You Will Have to Make When Installing Denver Granite Countertops

March 8, 2017

Have you decided to install granite countertops? Figuring out which stone you want to use is just the first of many decisions you will have to make. Now that you know you’ll be using Denver granite, it’s time to learn about the different types so you can make the best choice for your home.

Patterns

Granite comes in three different patterns, which are known as solid colored, marbled, and speckled. Solid colored granite is just as its name suggests—granite with one solid color that does not have any texture or flecks of contrasting colors in it.
Marble granite, however, has a solid colored background with veins of a different color running through it. One of the most popular marbled granites has a black background with bright white veining that looks very similar to real marble. If you want the look of marble but the durability of granite, this may be the right choice for you.
Finally, there is speckled granite, which may be what comes to mind when you think of this stone. Speckled granite varies in color, and often contains flecks of different colors within the slab. It is much more dramatic and textured than other granite patterns, so it’s the perfect choice if you want to make a statement with your countertops.

Finish

Now that you’ve figured out the pattern you want, it’s time to choose the finish. Granite comes in either a glossy or matte finish. Glossy finishes make the entire room sparkle and shine, while matte finishes are more understated and elegant. It’s often recommended that you choose a glossy finish if you are working in a small space. Why? The overhead lights will reflect off of the shine and make the entire room appear larger than it is.

Tiled vs. Slab

Most granite is installed by the slab, which means a large piece of stone is used with little or no grout. However, if you are looking to cut back on the budget of this project, you may want to consider asking about tiled granite instead. Tiled granite is installed in individual square tiles instead of large slabs. Installing tiled granite is much less labor intensive, so you may be able to save a bit of money by choosing this style. However, you should keep in mind that if you use tiled granite, you will have to regularly clean the grout just as you have to clean the grout in your bathroom shower or on your tile floors. This can be a hassle, especially if you’re installing the countertops in your kitchen, where food and liquids can easily cause stains. Learn how to clean granite countertops.
