Honed Slate

Gauged and Ungauged Slate

Slate is rough with uneven edges when it is pulled from the earth, so a lot of work needs to be done to the stone to transform it into a high-end flooring material. Gauged slate is any type of slate that has a flattened back. The back of  this stone needs to be flattened so each tile will lay flat and set into the mortar.

Ungauged slate, on the other hand, is only used in outdoor areas. This type of slate is rough and uneven on both sides, so it doesn’t lay flat when installed. It is often used to create a rustic, earthy atmosphere near outdoor seating areas.

Cleft Slate

The rough and raw material taken from the ground will eventually be cut into tiles. At this point, the slate is the right size and shape, but it still has somewhat rough and uneven surfaces. If it is left in this condition instead of polished and transformed into honed slate, it is known as cleft slate.

Cleft slate can be used both inside and outside the home. It is the perfect choice for homeowners who would like a flooring material that feels natural and rugged since it doesn’t have a smooth surface. But, some people find that walking across this type of slate is uncomfortable, so it’s recommended that you try to see a sample in person before committing to this option.

Polished Slate
