While natural stone is not absolutely water proof, when installed correctly, it works wonderfully in showers. Travertine Tiles and Denver Granite
Natural stone tiles such as travertine and granite add luxury, style and durability to your shower. Travertine is typically less expensive than granite, and can last for years, but vinegar or citrus-based cleaning solutions can wear it down. Granite is an extremely low maintenance stone and is resistant to most acids. It is commonly used in showers, as well as floors, countertops, and sinks.

Water-Resistant vs. Water-Proof
Sealed granite and travertine will resist water penetration, even though they are not absolutely waterproof. Granite is a much denser stone than travertine, which means it is less susceptible to water absorption than travertine. This makes granite tiled showers easier to maintain and clean, but you must seal both types of stone regularly to prevent the stone from absorbing water and developing leaks that could lead to mold and mildew.

Leak-Proof Substrate
As long as your granite or travertine tile and what’s underneath are installed properly, water leakage shouldn’t be a problem with either type of stone, because the water resistance of travertine and granite showers largely depends on what’s beneath the tile. If standard interior drywall is used as a substrate, moisture will absorb into that drywall, as the tiles will absorb some water. The key to preventing leaks in both travertine and granite tiled showers is to install a waterproof substrate. The installation surface for travertine and granite is typically cement board, which is also called “backer board.” While moisture-resistant drywall has a water-resistant outer layer, it is not ideal for exposure to significant moisture as would be present in a shower.
