Taking Good Care of Your Denver Granite

February 21, 2018

Granite has become wildly popular in homes in recent years. It’s a great way to completely change the look of your kitchen or bathroom counters, and for other areas of the house as well. Granite, which is an igneous rock that was formed over a period of millions of years, comes in a wide variety of gorgeous colors and patterns. It makes a beautiful statement in any home. If you are considering granite in your Denver home, you might be wondering if there is extensive care involved in keeping it looking good.

Granite that has been sealed doesn’t require a lot of care, but it is important that you treat your granite properly if you want to be able to enjoy it for many years to come.

The Importance of Sealing

Regardless of where you intend to use the granite in your home, it’s important that it has been properly sealed. Granite is a somewhat porous material, so sealing it can keep it protected from stains and scratches. Experts recommend that your granite kitchen counters be sealed about once a year. This will ensure that even if you spill something that is highly stainable, such as red wine, it will not be able to seep into the countertop.

How to tell if your counters need to be resealed? Put a bit of water on the counters. If it forms droplets, your sealant is still well intact. If it doesn’t, you should definitely apply sealant as soon as possible to protect the granite.

What Types of Cleaners to Use

People love granite because it is so easy to maintain. There is no need to use fancy cleaners with a bunch of chemicals or even bleach. Scrub brushes are not recommended for use on granite countertops. The best way to clean them is with good old-fashioned soap and warm water; even dish detergent is fine. There are also special cleaners available specifically for granite countertops, which you can also use.

When granite is sealed properly, there is little risk of bacteria seeping into the counters. But if you want to totally disinfect the counters, try using a solution of half water and half 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse the counters with water and dry it with a microfiber cloth.
